Desiderius Erasmus was the greatest classical scholar of his age and the publication of his Greek New Testament in 1516 played a vital role in the Reformation, being used as the primary source-text for Martin Luther to translate the New Testament into German for the first time in 1522, and for William Tyndale to translate the New Testament into English for the first time in 1526.
